Street theatre to rekindle sad memories
The poignant scenes, which are likely to rekindle memories of some very unhappy times in this country, will be played out in Cobh, Co Cork, at noon by the Daft Theatre Company.
The dramatic scenes, which will be played out in period costume, are a prelude to a five-week long run of two-hour shows which will tell the story of Sean McCarthy who was evicted from his home, along with his sick mother, in 1910.
Director of the theatre company Eoin Hally was giving little away about the plot yesterday, except to say that McCarthy gets a gift of a ticket from a priest to travel to the US.
“The plot takes a number of twists after that,” said Mr Hally, who has been working on the show for the past two years.
Today’s scenes of mayhem near the St Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh, will be a teaser for the shows and it is expected that hundreds of locals will attend the performance.
The shows will be staged at the Inishmore Theatre in Ballincollig and will include a mixture of performances, including a Riverdance-style spectacular.
Mr Hally said that the company was putting on the performances — which will run nightly from 8.30pm to 10.30pm — in conjunction with hotels in Cork city and county.
Hoteliers are keen to have their tourist guests attend the performances, but the shuttle buses will also be made available to members of the public.
Details of the show dates will be released in the next few days.
