OPPONENTS of water fluoridation have slammed the reduction in the amount of fluoride being put into our supplies as “window-dressing” and insufficient to stave off health risks.

Since the weekend, tap water in most parts of Ireland is now supposed to have fluoride levels of between 0.6 and 0.8 parts per million (ppm), with a target of 0.7, down from the previous level of 0.8 to 1.0 ppm.

The move by the Government is in line with a recommendation from a forum on the fluoridation of water that examined the issue in recent years.
