The man, who left the scene of the destruction, was fully co-operative with gardaí and a file on the matter is likely to be forwarded to the DPP, a garda spokesman said last night.

The driver, thought to be a foreign national, entered the northbound tunnel from the Mahon access point shortly after midday leaving a trail of ruin behind him. While the garda investigation is still in its early stages, it is thought the articulated lorry may have entered the busy tunnel with its lifting arm raised.
