Babies risk serious illness from rare skin infection

A VERY rare skin infection contracted by four babies born at Limerick’s Regional Maternity Hospital could lead to serious illnesses such as septicaemia, a top consultant warned yesterday.

The outbreak of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is the first of its kind reported in this country.

Tests are being carried out on a fifth baby to find out if she has SSSS.
