CHILDREN are being deprived of books and other learning equipment by local councils charging their schools commercial rates for water and waste collection, a teachers’ leader claimed last night.

Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) president said it was scandalous that schools which are already under-funded are being targeted as cash cows by local authorities.

“Primary schools are funded on a national basis yet charges are levied locally at different rates. Some schools are being charged more than others and this is totally unfair,” Mr Bohane told delegates at the INTO annual congress in Cork.
