Two held over murder of young father in west Dublin
The operation comes as detectives in Co Louth investigated the latest gangland murder, which occurred on Thursday.
Yesterday’s two arrests mark a breakthrough in the investigation into the death of Damien Dowdall, who was shot dead inside his home on Leyland Road, Clondalkin, on January 23.
The 22-year-old, who was not considered a criminal but was seen in the company of local drug dealers, was murdered in front of his girlfriend. Gardaí in Clondalkin carried out a number of dawn searches.
“During the course of the searches gardaí recovered a double-barreled sawn-off shotgun, cartridges, and cocaine and cannabis to the value of €10,000,” said a garda spokesman.
A 36-year-old man was arrested and detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 and can be held for up to 72 hours for questioning.
A 20-year-old man was arrested and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act where he can be held for up to 24 hours.
Meanwhile, detectives in Drogheda appealed to the public for assistance in relation to the gangland murder of a local man whose body was found in Mornington, Co Meath, on Thursday.
Gardaí named the deceased as Roy Coddington, 36, from Treadagh View in Drogheda. He was shot at close range. Gardaí are looking for two men seen escaping in a blue car.
Mr Coddington may have parked a van near the beach and got into a car before being driven onto the beach. Shortly afterwards, he was pulled from the vehicle and shot dead.
Garda and local sources in Drogheda said the deceased was known to be involved in the drugs trade. He is thought to have had a number of legitimate businesses in the town, including a furniture store.
A garda spokesman said they wanted to speak to anybody who was in the area of Maiden Tower, a landmark in Mornington, or along the beach between 2.30pm and 4pm on Thursday. Contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041-9874200.
