French bliss for Ocean to City crews
The market will line Albert Quay opposite the City Quarter Boardwalk and will provide a spectacular setting for spectators at the new race finish line.
The race, in its third year, will take place on Saturday, June 2, and entries have been coming in from all over Ireland, Britain and Europe. The event will be followed on Bank Holiday Monday with the Cork City Marathon — the city’s first in 21 years — capping a bumper weekend of sport in the city.
“We are expecting this year to be the biggest ever and are delighted that the boat race is coming all the way up to the city for a spectacular finish,” said Padraig Ó Duinnín of organisers Meitheal Mara. “Spectators are in for a very special day. The fact that crews will make their way right up the heart of Cork is enticing more crews to the city for the June Bank Holiday weekend.”
He said the river between Brian Boru Bridge and Michael Collins Bridge provides a natural amphitheatre.
This, coupled with the fantastic facilities of the new City Quarter Boardwalk, would really enhance the event.
Cork’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael Ahern, said the event would draw huge crowds to the city.
“We at city council are delighted to be involved. One of the key drivers of visitors to our city is great events such as this,” he said.
The Ocean to City race starts in RCYC, Crosshaven, goes out to Roche’s Point before coming all the way in the harbour to its new finishing point at City Quarter Boardwalk — a distance of more than 15 nautical miles.
“We expect up to 1,000 crew to take part and this will really bring the maritime heritage of Cork City back into the spotlight,” Mr Ó Duinnín said.
Ocean to City is supported by Cork City Council and sponsored by McCarthy Developments Ltd.
