School with 12 pupils to remain open

A 12-PUPIL primary school near the Cork/Kerry border is to remain open, following the intervention of the Bishop of Kerry, Dr Bill Murphy.

School with 12 pupils to remain open

Shrone National School, lying in the shadows of the Paps Mountains, was to become part of an amalgamated school in Rathmore, but parents resisted and waged a long campaign to save the tiny place of learning.

It has been confirmed that Education Minister Mary Hanafin, who recently met parents and teachers from Shrone, while she was on a visit to Killarney, has granted a request from the school patron, Bishop Murphy, to keep it open.

Shrone principal Colette Carmody yesterday: “This is something people in this area had been seeking for many years. They want to keep a nice, friendly, community school in the area. We’re very happy.”

A minimum of 12 pupils is required to retain the two teachers, but Ms Carmody said the Shrone population was growing and pupil numbers would reach almost 30 in four years.

Meanwhile, the new school in Rathmore is due to open in September.

The Department of Education has already stated that the retention of Shrone school could have staffing implications for the Rathmore school.

Parents in the Shrone area had won the backing of politicians from all parties.

When they met Ms Hanafin two weeks ago she did not give any commitments. However, it is understood the support of Bishop Murphy for keeping the school led to the decision.
