Mother and baby survive gun attack

A MOTHER and baby had a narrow escape after shots were fired through a downstairs window of their family home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Mother and baby survive gun attack

The 39-year-old mother was feeding her four-week-old baby in the living room of her home at 4 Springdale, Old Youghal Road, Cork, when the attack occurred.

Yesterday, the baby’s father, who wished to remain anonymous, described the act as “cowardly”.

“We were all in bed except for my wife who was downstairs feeding the baby. He’s very sick and spent the first two weeks of his life in hospital. A shot came through the window, shattered the glass, sending it flying all over my wife and baby,” he said.

The 45-year-old man said his six children, three boys and three girls aged up to 14 years, were traumatised by what had happened, but would not be leaving their home despite being fearful of further attacks.

“I wouldn’t take my kids from their home for anyone. They are very upset but we will be staying here,” he said.

A garda forensic expert from Anglesea Street Garda Station in Cork city examined the scene yesterday morning.

The shots were fired at approximately 4.45am. The father said one shot had been fired at the door and another through the downstairs window.

“We heard two or three bangs, it all happened very fast,” he said.

Investigating officer Superintendent Martin Shanahan of Mayfield Garda Station said a number of houses were searched for firearms yesterday following the shooting, including houses in Gurranabraher, Mayfield and Watergrasshill.

“We didn’t find any firearms, but we found a quantity of drugs in one of the houses,” he said.

Gardaí seized drugs with a street value of between €40,000 and €50,000 during the search.

A number of people are expected to be interviewed as part of the investigation into the attack. Supt Shanahan said the weapon used was a shotgun.

He said gardaí believe a small silver or grey car had been used.

Supt Shanahan appealed for anyone who may be able to help gardaí to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021-4558510.
