Prisoner awarded €35,000 for kitchen unit injury

A PRISONER who was injured while lifting a stainless steel kitchen unit while in jail was awarded €35,000 in compensation.

In total, over €300,000 was paid out last year for claims made by inmates (€120,098), prison officers (€126,329) and civilians (€57,929).

However, prison bosses paid over €556,000 in legal costs fighting the claims, nearly twice as much as they paid out in compensation.
