Security staff set to act over ‘tiger kidnappings’
Union representatives are expected to consider possible protests or work stoppages as part of their strategy.
“The meeting will decide what particular course of action we need to take to provide for the safety of our members. It will be an opportunity to get the reaction of staff,” said Kevin McMahon, SIPTU security branch secretary.
He said a number of members were calling for protests and work stoppages.
He said workers had cooperated fully with the range of security changes that had been introduced.
Mr McMahon said workers were annoyed at comments by Justice Minister Michael McDowell, criticising the industry’s slow progress in introducing greater security. He said staff were particularly annoyed given what, he claimed, was the failure of the minister and the Government to bring in safety measures repeatedly requested by the union.
