Traffic chaos after mother and daughter cut from car

TRAFFIC was thrown into chaos on the N7 outside Limerick yesterday following an accident at a notorious black spot.

A mother and daughter had to be cut from a car by fire fighters after a multiple vehicle crash at Daly’s Cross.

The accident involved a car, a van and an articulated lorry.

The two females, who have not been named, were taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital and were said to be stable after being treated in the A&E department.

Two ambulances and three fire tenders were tasked to the scene.

The crash happed at around 12.15pm.

Daly’s Cross, where a minor road from Castleconnell joins the national route, is regarded as one of the worst accident black spots in the Mid-West.

Major traffic calming measures have been developed along a 200m stretch of roadway.

Following the crash the roadway was closed off for much of the afternoon.

Traffic on the Lime rick/Dublin route had to be diverted through Newport, causing long delays and tailbacks.

A heavy lifting crane had to be used to clear the road and this took several hours.

Daly’s Cross has witnessed some horrific accidents over the years, many fatal.

Last year, a young boy living near the junction died when he was struck by a car while crossing the road.
