Hoax call leads to search for body

GARDAÍ in Limerick are investigating a hoax call that prompted a major search for a reportedly ‘dumped body’.

Hoax call leads to search for body

A man, reported to be the victim, was located safe and well yesterday.

A search began late on Sunday after gardaí were alerted to reports of a body being dumped, and continued yesterday in the Southill area.

Gardaí had also received a report that shots had been heard at nearby open ground known as Barry’s Field, next to Southill.

A garda spokesman at Roxboro Road station said: “We are treating this report... seriously. We got a report of shootings and people being injured.”

One report to the gardaí indicated that a body had been dumped in Barry’s Field, which is located between John Carew Park estate and the Southern Ring Road connecting the N20 to the N7.

One of the most brutal murders in the ongoing feud in the city was carried out at the field, in October 2003.

The body of Michael Campbell McNamara was found in a ditch by a man out walking his dog.

The dead man was linked to the Keane/Collopy gang, based on the opposite side of the city in St Mary’s Park.

Members of the McCarthy Dundon gang are suspected of luring Mr Campbell McNamara into a trap and abducting him.

He was brought to Barry’s Field, tortured and shot. His car was subsequently found some miles from the scene.

Gardaí said Sunday’s hoax had led to considerable resources being utilised, including manpower.
