Boost for youth crime diversion projects

EFFORTS to keep children and teenagers away from crime were given a boost yesterday with the announcement of a raft of new garda diversion projects.

Boost for youth crime diversion projects

Justice Minister Michael McDowell approved the locations of 10 new projects on the basis of local needs as prioritised by Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy.

“Garda youth diversion projects are a real and practical mechanism for assisting young people from becoming involved, or further involved, in anti-social or criminal behaviour. The projects are proving highly successful and are contributing to improving the quality of life within communities and enhancing garda/community relations,” the Tánaiste said.

Areas announced yesterday for the community initiatives include: Ballyogan, Dublin 18; Carrick-on-Suir; Castleisland; Celbridge; Kilrush; Listowel; Mallow; New Ross; Tipperary Town and Tuam.

The 10 new diversion projects mean there are 84 nationwide. This compares with 64 the same time last year. A report this week called for the full roll-out of restorative justice across the State, taking the focus away from punitive measures to deter young people from committing crimes.
