Record numbers using rail as fares set to rise by 2.75%

IARNRÓD Éireann did its best-ever business in 2006 when it clocked in the highest-ever number of passenger journeys.

Record numbers using rail as fares set to rise by 2.75%

A total of over 43 million journeys were made across Irish Rail’s Intercity, DART and commuter services to the end of the year, a massive 14% increase over the then record 37.7 million journeys in 2005.

“The increase reconfirms Iarnród Éireann’s standing as the European Union’s fastest-growing railway, a status achieved through the previous year’s 9% growth. In just two years since 2004, passenger numbers have increased by almost 25%, or 8.5 million journeys,” a company spokesperson said.
