Technology may ‘block’ prisoners using mobiles

PRISON bosses are to launch a crackdown on mobile phone use by prisoners in the coming months.

Prison Service director general Brian Purcell said the problem had to be addressed as “a matter of urgency”.

There have been longstanding concerns among gardaí that crime bosses and drug traffickers, as well as other criminals, were directing operations on the outside from their cells using smuggled mobile phones.
