Vomit bug ban at two hospitals
The restrictions at Cork University Hospital (CUH) and St Finbarr’s Hospital were stepped up after further tests confirmed that the bug, detected before Christmas, is still affecting the hospitals.
Patients in four wards — two at CUH and two at St Finbarr’s Hospital — are affected.
The situation is being reviewed on a daily basis, a spokesperson for the health service said.
It is likely the bans will remain in place for some time.
There is now a complete ban on visitors to St Clare’s Ward and St Oliver’s Ward in St Finbarr’s Hospital.
A hospital spokesman said concerned relatives of people in either unit should contact the hospital on 021-4923269 so that an individual arrangement may be made.
The hospital’s other wards, including its maternity unit, have not been affected.
“We regret having to take this decision to close these units to visitors but patient care is our priority,” said Cathleen Bowen, St Finbarr’s Hospital manager.
“Whilst the winter vomiting virus rarely causes severe problems, it can be debilitating to people who are elderly or infirm.
“We hope to limit its spread to other patients.”
