A PORTRAIT of a couple who have worked tirelessly for University College Cork for almost two decades was unveiled yesterday in the college building named after them.

The painting of Dr Tom Cavanagh and Marie Cavanagh by artist Trevor Goring will hang in the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building, which opened last March.

Dr Cavanagh, a commerce graduate of UCC, is vice chairman of the university’s Governing Body and a director of the Cork University Foundation. He is also chairman of the Irish Business Against Litter organisation.

College president Gerard Wrixon said the Cavanagh Building was named in appreciation of the couple who have served the university “tirelessly and with great distinction”.

“Dr Cavanagh has been a valued member of the Governing Body since 1989,” he said.

“The university is delighted that the Cavanagh name will be associated with this magnificent facility in recognition of their many years of dedicated service.”

Mr Goring was born and educated in London. He lives and works in Ireland.

He has painted the portraits of leading litigators and American Supreme Court judges.

The Cavanagh Building is home to both the undergraduate and postgraduate facilities of UCC’s School of Pharmacy, as well as to the university’s Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility.
