Minister Dick Roche yesterday rejected a central system for registering voters on the basis that local authorities were best placed to compile the records.

However, Mr Roche said he was in favour of setting up an electoral commission that would oversee the entire electoral process, including registration. He now intends to publish a green paper on the matter in the near future.

Mr Roche, speaking on RTÉ Radio’s ‘This Week’, was responding to findings that show between 170,000 and 400,000 people removed from the register need to be restored.
