Irish team jet out for ‘mammy’ of all yacht races

FOUR Cork men jetted out to Florida yesterday to represent Ireland at one of the world’s top international yacht races.

Skipper Diarmuid Foley, from Ballintemple, will lead the Irish challenge on board his yacht, Mammy! in the 2006 Mumm 30 World Championship in Miami next week.

His crew, including David Meagher from Carrigaline, Hugh Cassidy from Crosshaven and Bernard Fitzpatrick from St Patrick’s Hill, will be up against 28 boats from 10 countries in what is described as one of the Formula 1 events in yacht racing.

Other crew members include Robert Greenhalgh, who was on board the winning boat in this year’s Volvo Round the World, ABN Ambro One, and Anthony Haines and Connor Myant, both based in Britain.

Diarmuid said he is hoping to be the first Irish boat to take line honours in this prestigious class.

The Mumm 30s bridge the gap between smaller sports boats and larger offshore classes.

They are light, responsive, durable and exceptionally quick.

The Mumm 30 World Championship runs in Miami, Florida from November 29 until December 2.
