THE Government’s deputy chief whip has written to the president of the High Court asking him to explain why major drug dealers are escaping mandatory 10-year prison terms.

Fianna Fáil TD Billy Kelleher said serious criminals were receiving only light prison sentences or, in some cases, mere fines.

“They return to the communities they sought to destroy with renewed belief in their own invincibility,” Mr Kelleher said.
