ONE-IN-THREE immigrants in Ireland experience racism and discrimination in public places and at work, according to the findings of a major survey.

The first large-scale study of its type on migrants’ experience of racism also reveals that black Africans and asylum seekers are the groups most likely to be exposed to racist taunts and abuse, while 10% of all migrants reported that they had been the victim of a racist crime.

However, the study, which was carried out by the Economic and Social Research Institute as part of similar research in 12 EU member states, shows that racism levels in Ireland tend to be lower than in other countries, especially Mediterranean states.
