VAT on energy bills to stay, says Cowen

THE Government will not reduce VAT on household energy bills despite electricity and gas price hikes which will impact severely on consumers.

Finance minister Brian Cowen said the Government’s hands were effectively tied by EU red tape.

Bord Gáis bills rose by 33.8% at the beginning of September, while domestic ESB bills will increase by 19.4% from January 1.
