Special garda unit begins major crackdown on city’s shoplifters

A SPECIAL garda unit, with some members wearing plain clothes, have begun a crackdown on shoplifting in Cork city, amid fears that thieves could steal more than €1 million worth of goods between now and Christmas.

Cork Business Association (CBA), which has 230 members, has warned it will give “no quarter” to anybody caught shoplifting and will seek prosecutions through the courts.

The CBA also said it was coming across more shoplifters from middle-income backgrounds.
