Cullen plans driving licence regime change in response to road carnage

Transport Minister Martin Cullen aims to introduce a restrictive approach for drivers trying to acquire their first licence following an upsurge in the numbers being killed on the roads, writes Political Correspondent Shaun Connolly.

SWEEPING restrictions on new and learner drivers are to be ordered by Transport Minister Martin Cullen following an upsurge in road deaths.

The move came as three of the young men killed in a Monaghan accident which claimed four lives were buried yesterday and gardaí revealed officers made 456 drink-drive arrests last week — an increase of 45 on the previous seven days.
