SINN FÉIN president Gerry Adams last night insisted a deal can be done to keep power-sharing on track but republicans would not accept a “sack cloth and ashes” pledge on policing.

Speaking after the SF árd chomhairle in Dublin, Mr Adams said the party would consult widely on the St Andrews Agreement before the leadership decided whether to call a special Árd Fheis on whether to back the PSNI.

Mr Adams said the process would take a number of weeks and that SF was in favour of democratically accountable policing.
