THE Government has rejected an EU proposal which would have led to divorce law in other member states being applicable here.

Under Irish law, couples must be separated for four years before they can obtain a divorce.

However, the law in other member states, such as Finland and Sweden, is much less onerous and divorces can be obtained significantly quicker.
