CAMPAIGNERS for the elderly want the state pension to be hiked by €24 a week to €206 in the December budget.

Age Action Ireland also wants fuel allowances increased to €25 a week to compensate for the 33.8% hike in gas bills and the planned 19.7% hike in electricity in January.

Eamon Timmins, the charity’s head of advocacy, said Ireland’s pension rates were among the worst in Europe.
