Gardaí launch hunt for drugs gang after man shot dead
The shooting of Gary Bryan is the ninth death linked to a five-year feud between two gangs in the Crumlin and Drimnagh areas.
Mr Bryan, aged 31, from Tallaght, was shot outside his girlfriend’s house on Bunting Road in Walkinstown, near Crumlin, at around 7pm on Tuesday.
The gunman chased Mr Bryan across the road and shot him up to five times in the head.
“This was definitely part of the feud that has claimed some nine lives in the area in the past five years,” said a garda source.
The assailant escaped down nearby Balfe Road and in the direction of Long Mile Road in a silver saloon car, possibly a Subaru.
The gunman is described as 1.75m tall (5ft 9in) of stocky build, and wearing a green parka-style jacket with the hood pulled over what may have been a wig.
The deceased was well known to gardaí and was suspected of murdering a member of the rival gang in February 2004.
Paul Warren, aged 24, from Dublin’s south inner city, was shot dead in his local pub, by two attackers. Mr Bryan had been charged with his murder. However, the charges were withdrawn after the deceased’s girlfriend said she could not remember what she had said in previous statements to gardaí as she was “strung out” on cocaine.
Detectives are investigating the theory he was murdered by the rival gang for his suspected involvement in Warren’s murder.
Gardaí were yesterday trying to trace members and associates of the rival gang and last night set up checkpoints in the area.
Detectives try to keep regular surveillance on the movements of these people, which can be difficult as many of them sleep in different places every night.
Officers are also bracing themselves for revenge attacks.
Gardaí were yesterday talking to children who were on Bunting Road at the time of the shooting.
Forensic analysis of the area continued yesterday and State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post mortem on the deceased.
