TRUANCY levels soared across schools in Waterford, Tipperary and south Kilkenny yesterday as pupils abandoned their classrooms to join the fun in the sun at the Iverk Show in Piltown, south Kilkenny.

Fantastic sunshine helped record crowds flock to the showgrounds close to the Waterford and Tipperary border in south Kilkenny for the 180th Show.

Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, was on hand to officially launch the event but the longest and loudest cheers were for the Kilkenny hurling team, who were still fresh looking, despite four days of celebrating their All Ireland Hurling Final win.

It was clear from yesterday’s festivities that an election is not too far away. Fianna Fáil had its own hospitality tent on the grounds as Enda Kenny also used the event to get his political views crystal clear.

“It’s a privilege to be asked to open this show, the oldest in the country. It’s great to see the very best of Irish products on display. It’s great to be able to promote farming locally and nationally through this event,” Mr Kenny said.

He said opinion polls show that support for Fine Gael and Labour is growing. But he cautioned that an election is still several months away.

“Polls are reflections in time. What’s important is the underlying trend.

“While I’m hopeful this new energy in Fine Gael will be replicated here in Carlow/Kilkenny, people make up their minds on any one day.

“But its wrong for any one group to be in office for fifteen years,” he suggested.
