Government says motorbike theory test a ‘significant response’ to accidents
Transport Minister Michael Cullen announced details of the new test as part of an overhaul of the driver theory test which will see:
*A revision of existing questions in the Driver Theory Test Question Bank.
*The introduction of a separate test for candidates seeking a licence for motorcycles and mopeds.
*An increase from 750 to 1,250 in the number of questions in the Driver Theory Test Bank.
The new tests come into effect on October 21.
So far in 2006, 23 motorcyclists and pillion passengers have been killed on the country’s roads.
“The introduction of a separate theory test for learner motorcyclists is an important step in developing the knowledge and skills of motorcyclists. Taken in conjunction with the introduction of compulsory basic training for first-time provisionally licensed motorcyclists, these measures are a significant response in road safety terms in addressing the high ratio of accidents involving motorcyclists,” the minister said.
*The new Official Driver Theory Test — Second Edition book and CD will be in bookshops from this week. Copies may be ordered from the Driver Theory Testing Service at Lo-call telephone number 1890 606 106.
