Luxury hotel closes pool after legionella bacteria discovery
The Carlton Redcastle Hotel and Thalasso Spa in Moville has said it was advised last week that legionella bacteria levels in its Thalasso pool exceeded acceptable levels.
It said it was advised by the Health Service Executive (HSE) that it would have to close the pool.
Legionnaires’ disease is an infection of the lungs and is a form of pneumonia.
A hotel spokesman said: “Management at the hotel immediately closed the pool, thereby containing any risk to hotel staff or patrons. Anyone that is checking into the hotel has been advised and people are still proceeding with their bookings. The hotel is operating as normal.”
He added that no legionella traces were identified in any other part of the hotel and that it continues to operate as normal.
The hotel said it had taken advice from a leading independent public health expert who told them the legionella levels in the hotel pool present no risk to most healthy individuals.
“Only persons with underlying respiratory or other serious pre-existing health complaints are likely to be at risk,” the spokesman said.
