Vote on Dingle name needs over 50% majority

A MAJORITY of over 50% will be needed if a plebiscite on a controversial name change in Dingle is to be carried, Kerry County Council confirmed yesterday.

However, Kerry county manager Martin Riordan has pointed out that the outcome of the plebiscite, to be held in October, will have no legal effect.

Gaeltacht Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv, who has decided to change the official name of Dingle to An Daingean, has also said the result of the plebiscite will have no standing and has refused to back down in the face of strong opposition to his decision.
