30% of samples of groundwater polluted by sewage

THE primary sources of drinking water in Ireland have been found to be polluted by sewage.

In tests, the EPA found that disease-carrying organisms may have been present in certain cases.

As much as 30% of the 1,714 samples of ground-water taken between 2003 and 2005 were found to be polluted by bacteriological, faecal coliform contamination.
