No boost for garda unit targeting Islamic extremists

THE strength of a garda unit charged with targeting Islamic extremists has not been boosted over the last year, the Irish Examiner understands.

This is despite major terrorist incidents in Britain and the decision by Garda bosses to make the Islamist threat a key security issue for 2006.

It’s understood that the section of the Special Detective Unit (SDU) charged with monitoring Islamic extremism still only has around 20 detectives.
