Prison officers injured in ‘brutal’ attack
A prison source described the incident as “brutal.”
The incident occurred in A2 wing after the officers tried to confiscate a mobile phone.
A prison source said: “The two officers were on their rounds when they spotted him using a mobile phone in the A2 wing of the cell. They tried to take it off him but he turned on them immediately. He savagely attacked them with a heavy deck scrub.”
Both officers received head injuries before the prisoner was overpowered by other prison staff who rushed to the aid of their colleagues.
They were immediately rushed to the Mid-Western Regional hospital.
It is believed that one officer received a fracture to the face and the other officer sustained an eye injury.
The prisoner involved was recently moved to Limerick from Mountjoy Prison after he was repatriated from Britain.
He was serving a 15-year-sentence for his role in the robbery of a cash-in-transit van. It is believed he has four years to complete his sentence.
On average four mobile phones are confiscated by staff at Limerick Prison every week.
