Night out in Dublin 70% more expensive
The survey, carried out by Junior Chamber International, compared the cost of cinema tickets, beers, wine, nightclub entrance fees, takeaways and taxis across five cities in Ireland.
The best value city is Ennis, Co Clare, which scored lowest on nearly all entertainment prices.
The JCI survey showed that even prices for standardised entertainment, such as cinema tickets can vary widely, with the cost of a ticket almost a third more in Dublin and Galway than in Ennis.
Not surprisingly, Dublin was the most expensive, with entrance to clubs costing €20, while the next most expensive city to go clubbing in is Cork.
Aside from Cork, Dublin and Ennis, Dun Laoghaire and Tullamore were also surveyed.
The research, however, threw up some surprises, with Dublin taxis amongst the cheapest of the five venues, but beer and wine were most expensive in the capital.
A quarter-bottle of white wine cost €5.50 in Dublin while it would set you back €4.30 in Cork.
Ennis is also the place to go for curry chips, at €2.50 a pop compared to a whopping €3.80 in Tullamore.
National president of JCI Ireland, Suzanne Corcoran, says she hopes the survey illustrates the benefits of shopping around to get the best price.
“There seems to be a huge differential in the cost of night club entry around the country,” she said.
“It is yet another example of how young people living in larger cities are being ‘exploited’.”
