RELATIONS between Labour and Fine Gael members on Cork County Council deteriorated significantly yesterday as the local authority held its annual general meeting.

The election of the new mayor of Co Cork was the catalyst for some unusually ugly scenes between the two parties, which have agreed a pact nationally to fight the next general election.

An invitation sent to councillors earlier in the week for the opening of Mitchelstown bypass next Monday, showed that the mayor of Co Cork on that day would be FG’s John O’Shea — even though he wasn’t elected until lunchtime yesterday.
