Public may get to dine on 17th floor
At a special function to commemorate the reopening of the €62 million refurbishment and extension of Cork County Council’s headquarters, it was announced that Masterchefs Hospitality Ltd had signed a five-year contract to cater for corporate parties.
But the good news for ordinary punters is that they may get a look in as well.
Masterchefs managing director Pat O’Sullivan said the restaurant would be formally launched next August to cater for corporate events and special occasions. However, he added that he was considering throwing the doors open for such occasions as Mother’s Day, Holy Communions and Confirmations.
“There is no comparable venue in the country and we are anxious that as many people as possible will be able to dine in it,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
His company will be able to serve more than 200 people on the 17th floor and on the floor below, which was formerly the council’s debating chamber.
County Hall stands at 212 feet and refurbishment work began in February 2005.
The main contractor was Rocon.
All 650 staff who vacated the tower during renovations have just returned.
When Cork’s tallest building opened in April 1968, it cost £613,315 to construct.
It is the only post 1940-building in the city listed for protection.
The tower will be officially opened next Monday.
