Red Army gets treat as Munster goes online
The former second row is anchoring a talk show on the Internet.
Munster are following the lead of some of the top sports clubs around the world with their own webcast, featuring Mick Galwey.
He’ll give fans an insight into the biggest day in European club rugby as he recalls Munster’s previous two Heineken Cup final appearances.
Among the moments ‘Gaillimh’ will recall from his playing days was the infamous moment in the closing stages of the 2002 decider in Cardiff when Neil Back broke Munster hearts by playing the ball with his hand in the scrum — which wrested the initiative from Munster and protected Leicester’s fragile winning margin.
This first ever podcast is available to download free at www.munsterrugby.ie, www.toyota.ie and on iTunes.
Also featured on the show, hosted by Today FM’s sportscaster Paul Collins, will be current captain Anthony Foley, who talks about the added motivation of wanting to overturn last year’s defeat by Biarritz in the Heineken Cup quarter-final in San Sebastian.
Injured front row stars Marcus Horan, who still hopes to make the squad, and Frankie Sheahan also talk of their battle to regain fitness in the run-up to such a huge game.
The half-hour podcast is the first episode in what will be a continuing series as Munster seek to cash in on their huge worldwide appeal.
Garrett Fitzgerald, chief executive of the IRFU Munster branch, said: “We are well aware of our massive fan base all over the world. It is clear from the high volume of visitors to our website — www.munsterrugby.ie — that there is a huge interest in the team and all things Munster, along with a great demand for information.”
He said the new initiative would allow Munster fans worldwide to access interviews with players and other high profile figures before Saturday’s decider.
Presenter Collins said: “It is a particular pleasure to be involved in Munster’s initial webcast and work with a legend like Mick Galwey. It just shows how professional an organisation Munster rugby is now.
