Popular bathing spot could close

FEARS are growing that a popular swimming and diving spot could be closed to the public because of fears of insurance claims.

An insurance assessment has already been carried out on the popular Guillamene at the Newtown Cove area in Tramore, County Waterford by the council’s insurer. It follows a serious accident and a High Court claim for an accident at a similar hot-spot in Dublin.

And town councillors fear that if the cost of bringing the area up to insurance standard proves prohibitive, the area could be closed off altogether.

Tramore Town Council has been told that restrictions will soon be placed on activity at the site which lies along the coast road, about a mile and a half from the seaside town. But what exactly is planned is still a bit of a mystery, according to local councillor, Ben Gavin.

Among the measures likely at the site would be the removal of the diving board. “It would be absolutely devastating if we had to close this area to the public,” Cllr Gavin said.
