Election promise for extra gardaí can't be met

THE election promise to recruit an additional 2,000 gardaí can no longer be achieved according to the Government's progress report.

The commitment to extra gardaí was made when street violence was to the fore of the public conscience.

But one year on, as statistics show an alarming rise in serious crime and public order offences, the Government has admitted it cannot presently live up to the promise.
