DJ swaps Croker for Cuba for charity
Come October when he heads for the 10-day, 120-mile Cuban trek there could be an extra spring in his step - should the Noresiders lift yet another All-Ireland crown.
“I am delighted to be part of this adventure, particularly as it is for a great cause,” said DJ, whose enthusiastic support of charitable causes is widely known.
On this occasion, the Kilkenny ace is lining out for the Irish Heart Foundation’s overseas sponsored walk, starting and finishing in Havana (October 25-November 6).
“Cuba is a very exciting prospect and I invite walkers of all abilities to come with us,” said DJ yesterday.
Announcing the details, IHF spokeswoman Ruth Findlater said: “This is the 16th overseas walk we have organised. It now raises in excess of €225,000 each year.
“Money raised will help the Irish Heart Foundation with the fight against premature deaths from coronary heart disease. Each walker must raise €4,800 before departure.”
Cuba, they say, is the hot holiday destination, with magnificent beaches, inland mountain regions and cities dating back to Methuselah.
It offers an excellent variety of walk locations, prompting the IHF to select Topes de Collantes National Park on top of the mountains of Escambray Ridge.
While the walking continues - at about 10 miles a day - lunch breaks will be extended so participants can enjoy the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea and plan post-walk options such as snorkelling in the coral reef, kayaking or simply relaxing on the beach.
