Garda success in combating gangland warfare
There have been five gang related killings and one, the murder of elderly Tallaght woman Joan Casey, is believed to be connected to a family feud.
Alan Greene, a 31-year-old from Bray, was stabbed to death in Mountjoy Prison on January 27. His killing was linked to a ongoing dispute outside the prison. No-one has been charged.
Days later, Kenneth Byrne, a 31-year-old who had only just been released from Mountjoy after serving a sentence for drugs offences, was shot dead at his family home in south inner city Dublin. He was killed for allegedly informing on associates. No-one has been charged.
In late February, 23-year-old Paul Warren was shot dead as he sat in a pub in the Newmarket district of south inner city Dublin. One man has been charged with his murder.
In early March, Brendan Cox, 41, died after being struck in the back by two bullets from a shotgun. Seven people, five men and two women, were arrested but none was charged.
On April 3, 64-year-old Joan Casey was shot dead at her home in Tallaght. Two men appeared in court two weeks later, charged with murder.
On April 17, Jonathan O’Reilly was fatally injured after being shot outside Cloverhill Prison. The 24-year-old had only recently released from prison. Two men have been charged with his murder.
