RESIDENTS in West Waterford say they will take whatever legal steps necessary to prevent a waste management company developing a plant in their area.

They say they will go to An Bord Pleanála and will object to any license which might by granted to AES Ireland for a plant in Portlaw. The Kildare company plans to treat effluents and compost organic waste at the former Michell Ireland plant at Killowen.

More than 200 attended a meeting in the area on Thursday. So far, 37 objections have been submitted to Waterford County Council. It has asked for more time and more information from the proposed developers of the site.
