The boy was left in a bag at a bus stop in busy Clanbrassil St at lunchtime on Saturday.

The infant was discovered by passers by who raised the alarm and he was taken to hospital where he was said to be in good health.

Before being abandoned the baby had been well wrapped-up to ensure he did not suffer from the bitter cold.

Police investigating the circumstances of the discovery appealed to the mother to come forward, promising that she would be treated with the utmost compassion and sensitivity.

“Our concern is reuniting mother and baby,” said Det Sgt Walter Kilcullen.

He said she clearly wanted the baby to be found and to come to no harm.

“The baby was wrapped in tin foil and a towel. It was left at a busy bus stop near a shop.

“The mother may have even been nearby to ensure he was picked up.”
