JIMMY DEENIHAN got a phone call last month from a sporting colleague who now lives in Scotland to congratulate him for leading an Irish politicians team against a side from the parliament in Edinburgh.

The event, to back the ill-fated joint bid for the 2008 European soccer championships, got huge publicity in both countries and Mr Deenihan’s active role surprised his old pal.

“The rest of us are dead or near enough to it,” his old buddy mused ruefully.
