Labour slams McDowell jail plan

JUSTICE Minister Michael McDowell was yesterday accused of trying to introduce sweeping changes to criminal law by stealth.

Labour party justice spokesman Joe Costello said under a Government proposal Irish citizens, convicted of a crime in Europe, could be imprisoned here for the duration of the sentence.

He said Irish courts could not appeal the conviction and that signatory states included countries such as Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan.
