Gardaí seize drugs and arrest man at train station

THE feuding gangs in Limerick have been dealt another blow following a second seizure of drugs in Dublin bound for the city.

Gardaí seize drugs and arrest man at train station

A man from Limerick, suspected of being aligned to the Keane crime family, was arrested just as he was about to board a train for Limerick.

Officers attached to the Limerick Drugs Unit, assisted by the Garda National Drugs Unit (GNDU), nabbed the man at Heuston Station.

They recovered 20,000 amphetamine tablets, said by gardaí to have a final street value of around €200,000.

It is the second drug seizure in Dublin this month that was destined for the Limerick market.

The previous haul, a half a kilogramme of heroin, is suspected of being the work of a notorious crime family from the opposite camp in the Limerick feud.

The seizures are part of an operation involving the Limerick Drugs Unit, the GNDU and other drug units in Dublin.

“This is an ongoing investigation into the supply of drugs from Dublin down to Limerick,” said one source.

Wednesday’s operation was the result of information received by the Limerick Drugs Unit. After contacting the GNDU, a surveillance operation was put in place and an arrest made.

The man, aged in his 20s and from Co Limerick, was taken to Kilmainham Garda Station.

He was detained under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

Officers attached to the GNDU were yesterday understood to be carrying out follow-on enquiries in a bid to determine who supplied the Limerick man with the drugs. The haul followed the seizure of half a kilogramme of heroin, worth €110,000, in Dublin on January 7. The drugs, seized in Crumlin, south Dublin, were destined for Limerick.
