THE Labour Party will today ask the Government to make a provision in the Finance Bill for a taxpayers’ ombudsman to ensure repayments of overpaid tax due are made promptly.

Although the issue of overpaid tax has been largely championed in recent weeks by Fine Gael, Labour finance spokesperson Joan Burton will today propose an amendment to the Government’s Finance Bill as it reaches committee stage.

“It is simply not good enough for the Revenue Commissioners to say that after the end of the tax year, if the taxpayer completes a tax return then any overpayment will be identified and refunded.
